Water can travel along felt, timbers and ceilings before it becomes visible indoors, so the damp patch is not always directly below the defect. Details about recent weather, when the leak started and which room is affected can help the first assessment.
Photographs taken safely from the ground, an upstairs window or inside the loft can be helpful. Do not climb onto the roof to take pictures. The responding roofer may still need close access to confirm the cause and agree the repair.
